‘Teach on the Beach’ initiative launched

9 May 2014
The Natural Connections Demonstration Project is working with Ecover Blue Mile to run a series of workshops in ‘blue spaces’ across the South West.

‘Teach on the Beach’ will provide approximately 100 teachers with the knowledge and skills to deliver curriculum learning to pupils in ‘blue spaces’ in the outdoors, such as beaches, estuaries, lakes and rivers.
Thousands of schoolchildren will benefit from the project which is a partnership linking Natural Connections, being delivered by Plymouth University – with the Ecover Blue Mile and some of the biggest organisations in education and conservation.
The workshops are open to all, although the main audience will be teachers from primary, special and secondary schools. The aim is to give teachers the confidence to maximise the cross-curricular learning opportunities that a ‘blue space’ has to offer. ‘Teach on the Beach’ will also encourage more children to become involved with the marine environment.
The world-class training programme will come from the Eden Project, the Marine Biological Association,Nature Workshops and Earthworks. The sessions are open to all schools across the South West on a first come, first served basis. There are six workshops on offer:
  • 19 May: Nature Workshops at South Milton Sands Beach, Devon
  • 4 June: Earthworks at Anchor Head Beach, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset
  • 12 June: The Eden Project at Polzeath Beach, Cornwall
  • 17 June: Nature Workshops at Goodrington Beach, Paignton, Devon
  • 18 June: Marine Biological Association at Batten Bay, Plymouth, Devon
